yeah yeah i haven't written anything on this blog this year until now. i've been saving my brain for a proper blog entry about you know what i've been up to (not much, other than working on your pretty face #16 and lazing about) but shit i just realized that it's liek 28th january and there's something i need to plug ASAP before it's too late!

GIRLS GET BUSY's 1st birthday party is on tuesday 31st january at the alibi in dalston and i, yours truly, am djing there among other awesome folks AND THERE IS RIOT GRRRL KARAOKE. FUCK YEAH. it's going to be awesome, and i'm super excited. i've been wanting to go to girls get busy for a while, but the nights are always in the middle of the week and i've had to work so it's not been feasible. but i've got tickets to go see wild flag on 1st february and a bunch of holiday to spend before april so i booked a few days off next week and well, i asked beth if they had space for djs. i was going to go anyway, but she said sure! i haven't dj'd since the last typical grrls which was back in may. i've missed it and i'm stoked to be doing it again. i've just been trying to make a vague plan of what to play. i won't tell what i've got in store for y'all but i tell you i wish i could play this following track one of my old friends posted on facebook, but i unfortunately don't have it in mp3 or record form (oh how i wish i did)

i went to see wild flag last night at the lexington with my old friend riikka. the support act was veronica falls, who also played last time when i went to the lexington to see comet gain.. not that i'm complaning! veronica falls were good, like last time. though the guitars seemed to be mixed louder than vocals and i could barely hear any of the singing... but it seems be part of their sound. wild flag were amazing. i don't even know where to start. i am incredibly sore today. i've been limping since last wednesday for am unknown reason, which wasn't made any better from dancing like a maniac all through the gig. and my neck is ever so sore from erm.. head banging. i also had a super excellent time hanging out with riikka. we did unplanned synchronized dances and talked a whole lot of rubbish in finnish. reminiscing and catching up. we need to hang out more, it's been too long and she's only in lewisham. that's not that far! return there is cheaper than to proper london. we might start a ukulele riot grrl cover band if i ever actually get one. it's weird though, i'd probably be a pretty different person if i hadn't met her on the internets some fifteen-ish years ago (at least 13)

i was supposed to go to the work christmas do tonight but i'm still super sore, and i've been in a bit of an antisocial mood and been completely confused from not getting up until noon. then again i didn't actually get home until 2am, since the last train stops everywhere. seriously, i was looking at the train stations and thinking "i'm not on the wrong train am i? i don't remember ever been through belvedere before!" oh and carl's poorly. i'm pretty sure he actually has a fever. or well, had earlier. he's less sizzling hot now. i don't want to catch anything off him. it's just not the time for me to be ill. it's december. in a toy shop. IT IS HELL. working in a toy shop will make you into a grinch, mark my words. (partial reason why i haven't been posting lately. too tired to think beyond reblogging stuff on tumblr. that and not having much to say...)

i only took 45 photos, but i'd totally have more if my battery hadn't run out couple of songs into wild flag. this is what happens when you don't recharge the batteries, just in case. seriously, the battery was showing up as full until i got to the venue and took 2 pictures of veronica falls. typical.
i also only recently started using my dslr again, partially because i can't find my pocket size digital camera anywhere and a little bit cos i finally got a new lense cap! it seems the last time i had used it was in the beginning of march. shameful. though to be honest, beyond being akward, massive and missing a lense cap, it had also been acting up. refusing to recognize the memory card. i took it up to college sometime in the spring to ask for advice and another riikka, whom i went to uni with who is now a technician in the photography department, tried putting a different memory card in it but it was still acting up. so i don't know what's wrong with it. usually taking the card out and putting it back in again works, after a few times.. if anyone's got any ideas what's wrong with it and how to fix it (it's a nikon D70s) let me know!

oh and this afternoon i bought me a ticket to see wild flag again in february! cos you knows i had to.

incase you were wondering, i thought i'd share a small list of some of my favourite horror films (in no particular order) i must confess some of them are fairly obvious but whatever. i can't be queen of fucking indie all the time.

GINGER SNAPS, 2000

GINGER SNAPS II: UNLEASHED, 2003

i recently re-watched the first ginger snaps, and then finally watched the second one, and i have the third one waiting for me too for when i get around to it. i didn't expect much from ginger snaps II: unleashed, cos you know, it's a sequel and you know how sequels usually are but i highly recommend it. if for nothing else, the end. as i did not expect that. i will say no more.

THE DEVIL'S REJECTS, 2005

i enjoyed this more than the house of 1000 corpses, which i did love too but the beginning was a bit too much like a bad marilyn manson wannabe video. or maybe i just have a massive crush on sheri moon zombie hacking shit up. just so you know, i also liked rob zombie's halloween remake better than the original (i like backstory, and mr zombie provided it more than mr carpenter.)

DAWN OF THE DEAD, 1978

dawn of the dead is a classic for a reason. and to be honest, i have no desire to see the remake, cos it's that excellent. zombies in a shopping mall. also, love the day of the dead. carl made me watch a large chunk of his dad's horror collection when i lived at his house and the george romero's were on top of the pile, along with the usual suspects (texas chainsaw, evil dead, blah blah blah)

during my first year, me and my housemates anna & julie watched.. i would say a lot of horror films but that would be a lie. in truth we only watched audition, the ring and blair witch project but we were all bloody terrified and they influenced our lives quite significantly. though i might just think that because i used to love sneaking up on the girls and pretending to be sadako. or going kiti-kiti-kiti at them (like asami. i've forgotten what it means now, it's been too long since i have seen audition) blair witch didn't make my list because to be honest it wasn't that scary in the end, but these were. or at least we were shitting ourselves because we were so on the edge expecting to be terrified that everything terrified us. which reminds me, i should probably watch the grudge sometime (the original japanese one) because we were watching it at college as something for a project, i think the voyerism project) and i had to leave after then minutes because everytime i got startled by creepy ghost child i would scream and well, that's not something i wanted to keep doing in the company of thirty odd people i saw daily.

THE OMEN, 1976

i have very fond memories of the whole omen series. i've even seen omen iv: the awakening with the really randomly evil little girl. though to be honest this is because one of the tv channels back home showed them all one summer and i had a tv at the end of my bed in my very own room! i rather enjoyed predicting who was going to die next. and for the record, i think i was wrong only once.

OUTPOST, 2008

carl's dad recommended this to us cos it had two of his favourite things: nazis and zombies (now if it had freddie mercury, i think he would have popped from happy) i expected it to be ok, but it was so good.

ATTACK THE BLOCK, 2011

carl says attack the block wasn't a scary movie but i beg to differ. monster movies count.

SHAUN OF THE DEAD, 2004

i don't really know if shaun of the dead counts as a horror film as it's just that funny, and on purpose. but i can't not include it on my list.

it was vampire sushi's 2nd birthday yesterday! hurrah! i was going to post about it yesterday but i was too busy finishing up VAMPIRE SUSHI #2 so i could finally print it today during my lunchbreak. i was planning to do that monday, but i didn't manage to finish sunday night, and i just couldn't stay up untilstupid hour since mondays are hella busy and exhausting at work. not that going to bed at half one was that sensible. (stayed up til 3am last night. kinda dead now)

the hallowe'en window at my work. it's been hella busy all week.

i sort of dressed up yesterday for my trip to post office / town on saturday since i have no halloween plans this year. (still gutted about breaking my arm two weeks before halloween and missing ellie's halloween party. and tabling at a movie night thingie in london) i bought some fangs from work but damn they are so much whiter than my teeth so no vamp tukru. but i got some face paint and did this to myself:

i'm not entirely sure if i was a zombie or a ghoul or just generally dead and battered. did get quite a few funny looks in town. and compliments when i popped in at work. (actually i didn't add the white stiches til i got home and was supposed to put the pies in the oven. step away from the facepaint)

i've been meaning to post here for weeks and weeks but i never seem to know what to say or have anything to say or any pictures. or pictures of the stuff i wanted to talk about. or some other reason why it's not happening. i have new things i want to show you but my camera batteries have run out and i only just found the charger and the batteries and charged them.

i haven't been up to much, really. working, watching angel, working on the vampire sushi birthday zine (it's looking pretty damn awesome, even if i say it myself.) working some more, buying buffy comics (or as carl likes to correct me, graphic novels) off ebay, got a deck of tarot cards & borrowed a book from emma but i haven't sussed it out yet at all.

i should really be working on vampire sushi #2 instead of writing a shitty blog entry and watching ginger snaps 2: unleashed. i need to have it ready to print tomorrow during my lunch. and i'm so not anywhere near there yet. need to get cracking! i will be launching it tomorrow, along with a special 2nd birthday giveaway. keep your eyes peeled for it tomorrow.

VAMPIRE SUSHI #2 COMPILATION ZINE desperately needs your submissions! we have extended the deadline until 23rd OCTOBER now (since the original deadline was almost two weeks ago and we've received none…)

so yes, we are looking for drawings, photographs, collages, embroidery, anything! also considering horror stories and reviews of horror films! also, pictures / drawings of your past and present halloween costumes! the main theme is vampires but other monsters & horror creatures / themes are welcome too. anything related to twilight is not welcome, unless its taking the piss out of sparkly 'vampires'.

the zine will be quarter size / a6 but your piece doesn't have to be necessarily, we're perfectly able to resize things on the photocopier or in photoshop before we print it for the flats. you can either email us artwork in digital form or mail it (email us for the address).

we'd especially love zinesters we distro to take part in this compilation.

(also supposed to have lisa of sometimes i'm dreaming but unfortunately her new job's induction was changed to today! suckfest) i'm hella nervous, mostly because a) i haven't ever done this before and b) i was going to read a new piece i've been working on for #16 but i totes haven't finished it! i was frantically scribbling shit down for it last night during QI and missed all the quite interesting stuff. so yes, i have no idea what i'm going to read! woe ist me. anyway, i should go make a cup of coffee, some toast and get moving.

at this very moment, i should be knitting and chatting from behind a little round table with a horse patterned table cloth and a bunch of zine on it in sheffield at the sheffield zine fair, but.. i had a bit of a mini freak out yesterday about half an hour before i needed to leave the house to catch a train to london & a megabus to sheffield from there on. last weekend i went to sweden and had a bit of a rough time coming back (flight delayed by FOUR HOURS, had no sleep the night before because i figured oh i'll snooze on the plane leaving at 9.40 and be home in the late afternoon and chillax then. bollox to that plan, i got home in the evening had a pizza and a bath and went to bed at 10 and still was shattered on monday) and then had a bit of a shitty week at work (the good computer 'died' on tuesday and instead of having wednesday off i did short days on tuesday & wednesday, and then was SICK SICK SICK on thursday. like proper. puked everything out first thing in the morning and then felt really feeble and week all day and spent most of it in bed. and then had a super hectic day at work on friday trying to catch up with EVERYTHING since the computer worked again, apparently there was NOWT wrong with it in the end.) so yeah, i was shattered and my travel plans were just too easy to get fucked up (my megabus back was 45min after the zine fest finished, latest available coach anywhere for some reason) and i just needed to stay home for once. i had already packed the zines, i'd even been super organized and put them in the boxes in alphabetical order so it's easy to restock, AND i'd put the zines i was going to put out on the table first in a separate box. woah..

The Pirate Castle is a short distance away from Camden Town tube station (on the Northern line) and is also close to several bus stops (too many to name, but check the tfl website to plan your route).

Both floors of the Pirate Castle are fully wheelchair accessible via a lift. There is a wheelchair accessible toilet on both floors. Signs are marked in Braille as well as in large type. There is an induction loop on both floors.

yep, you read that right. i'm hosting a zine reading at the camden zine fest, along with having a table. i think i'm also dragging carl along to watch the stall while i run around. he's only ever been to two little zine fests in southampton and tunbridge wells in our first year of 'business', and both those fairs were really quiet and we were hella bored. but i think he'll be pleasantly surprised by a zine fair in london. he can also wander off to camden market if he pleases. it'll be nice to show him zine fests are actually quite fun!

i'm pretty nervous about the zine reading. i have no idea what i should read (any suggestions??) i'd love to read something new but the only zine i'm currently working on is the ark one and that's not necessarily particularly interesting to an outsider. i might start scribbling shit before then but who knows. i'm pretty sure there will be no new issue of pretty face for a while though. not until i get the ark stuff out of my head. but anyway, as a practice of sorts, i made a zine reading video earlier, from your pretty face #15.

i've been getting ready for my adventures next week. i'm sure i've briefly mentioned it before; i'm going to stockholm, sweden to see the ark one more last ever time (for real this time) the gig is on friday, but i'm flying over on thursday and coming back on sunday. i'm joining hanna, silj, stu & unska (they're sailing there from finland overnight, arriving few hours before me) and we'll be joined by jasmine on friday. it shall be epic epic EPIC.
anyway, i got myself a new more gig friendly handbag that i've been lusting after at primark (seriously, how cute is that! it's got a long shoulder strap too, and i reckon i could even fit my lunchbox in it or my dslr if i actually still ever used it..) and i got myself some swedish cash ready for thursday. tomorrow i'm going to find and wash all the clothes i'm taking with, all ready for thursday. (the first pic is unrelated to sweden, it's just post i got yesterday that carl forgot to tell me about until this morning)

i rather wanted to finish my epic zine about the ark in time for the last gig but i'm still at spring 2005 and 7,400 words and nowhere near finished. so i've decided fuck it, it'll be finished when it's finished (hopefully by christmas) and this way i'll hopefully even be 100% happy with it. or at least more than 50% happy. i had been hoping to be able to sell some at the gig on friday, when i'm surrounded by people who actually know who the ark are and give a shit but instead i've made a facebook page for the zine and some flyers with the info for it. and stuff. it still needs a few more likes though before i can have the nice short url i've put on the flyer.. *hint hint*

i had the most excellent & doctor whoest doctor who day ever yesterday. i had work for the first time on a saturday for months. but it was alright since my boss wasn't there (hence me being there..) and i managed to somehow do lots and then also wrap most of the post (as the chap who does the wrapping phoned in sick with a cold, blah) i bought some estonian ciders, and some cookies, crisps and guacamole on my lunchbreak for snacks and carl got some rum and coke and doughnuts on his way home. snackalicious. i made awesome burgers with guacamole & guyere cheese for dindins which we finished just before the new doctor who was on. whee!

my appropriate and obvious choice of outfit for the night, my the who's t-shirt from teefury! (blurry picture thanks to carl's ipod way after bed time)

after doctor who we watched x-factor which i not so secretly enjoyed and carl didn't complain during almost at all (magic of rum rum rum) and something else and then we watched the five doctors, which we got courtesy of our lovefilm subscription.

THE APOCALYPSE IS NOT QUITE OVER...

so yes, i went to finland last month. i've been back for a couple of weeks now but i haven't had the brain power to actually post anything about it. too many goddamn photos. but here be a little bit about the first part of my trip!

first of all i went to tampere to see the ark 'one last time'. part of my 'look' was an epic sleeve of temporary tattoos. it took us over an hour to do while waiting for the gig to actually start. it was epic, and probably one of my best bad ideas ever. though it was a bitch to get off. i still had remnants of it on my arm more than a week later, despite vigorous scrubbing. i think it was worth it though.

(after we finished the sleeve / a lot later the same night after after partying at our car on the parking lot w/ sylle)

during my travels i had knitted a little doll sort of resembling me to give to ola (the singer) to give to his little girl. sadly i didn't actually get a chance to give it to him so little tukru is still with me. somewhere in here. i might re-do her actually cos i'm not enterily happy with her hair. and some of her filling is a bit iffy = scrap yarn because i didn't have enough actual filling with me..

i don't particularly want to talk about my trip too much, i'm internally saving it all up for another issue of your pretty face. and part 2 (the goodbye part) of the ark zine. but i'll tell you this; i had excellent time on my the ark adventures. i had excellent company, and i must confess if i hadn't i would have probably been miserable for some chunks of it when things went wrong, like when it rained the whole night in vasa and the only part of me that wasn't soaked through was the top of my head (thank you trusted bowler hat!) and i'm now looking forward to actual one last time in september with these crazy bitches. i haven't actually booked the flights yet, but i'm hoping to do it this weekend. i've got the holiday booked off and everything!

maybe i'll write about the rest of it later. i don't know.

i've been back from finland for about a week now, but i just haven't got around to making a post about it. and it's not going to happen today because i've got something else to tell y'all. VAMPIRE SUSHI DISTRO is back from holiday break, with new zines and new layout too.

among the new zines are two of mine; YOUR PRETTY FACE IS GOING STRAIGHT TO HELL #15 and KISSAKERHO #1. in your pretty face #15 i write about changing my method of birth control, quitting roller derby, getting some financial good news, slutwalk london and prospect of turning 29. kissakerho #1 is my first zine in finnish in over 10 years. i write about how i ended up in uk and where i am, turning 29, and why england is shit. i also gush about the awesomeness of zines with some zine recs (i wouldn't call them reviews) and a how to make yr own zine guide.

i might post about finland later on, or i might save it all for another issue of your pretty face about going home. we'll see.

ps. i'm listening to this mix on 8tracks and bloody hell it's lovely. i wish i could take it to bed with me or something.

i'm going to finland tomorrow morning. in two hours i have to leave the house to catch a train to london to catch the tube to heathrow so i can hang around for 6 hours waiting to be able to check-in. my flight is at 7.30 am. i'm flying to helsinki, and catching another flight to tampere from there. i will arrive in tampere at 2.15pm finnish time. (that's two hours in the future) that's almost a five hour journey. i'm nervous. i've never before had to catch a connecting flight. i have no idea how that works. i will be asking bleary eyed silly questions at heathrow check-in.

i think i'm more or less packed. though i keep thinking OH NOES I HAVE TOO MUCH STUFF, and worrying it will be over the 23kg limit (i doubt it but i have no big people scales to prove me wrong with) i'm pretty sure previously it has been teatering around the limit cos it's been packed with cider etc on the way home. besides there will be a big gap in the bag on the way home cos i've got sunhats for my mama (they've sold out in finland because of the heatwave) and they take a surprising amount of space. then again, my bowler hat will still be in there.

i've got a lot of knitting, some zines & books and a whole lot of notebooks to keep me occupied at heathrow. carl's also just fixed the ipod (it refused to charge after he fixed it last week, but he's fixed that fixing now, and it's charging!) so i'll have some tunes despite the fact my new phone's new memory card + usb port hasn't arrived (stupid thing didn't come with a usb lead, wtf nokia) i've set up twitter on my new phone so i might very well be live tweeting my boredom on my twitter: www.twitter.com/kissakerho unfortunately i won't see any replies (unless i change the settings later, i might.)

i'm gonna go put some more britney and the art brut album on my ipod, and i think i'll also have neil gaiman reading stardust if you don't mind.

as mentioned, sunday was my 29th birthday. and i went up to london on saturday for some zinefesting and a wee picnic. here be some photos, i'm too lazy to write about them, really.

books, i got loads of books this year. good omens from lorilorilori, rest of them from carl (charity shop pressies)

the birthday cake i got TODAY (three days late, but w/e) from my neighbours. old lady upstairs commissioned the lady upstairs who makes cakes to make me a cat cake! it's not the prettiest cat, but damn if i'm not touched! you should have seen my face. seriously. ps. carl loves the bakery name ;) i haven't dared to cut into the cake yet, i think i might save it til we have company / carl's mum (&maybe brothers) come over to bring me my presents. i keep getting late presents. (still haven’t got carl’s proper one. cos he hasn’t even bought it yet. but you know what, i’m a big girl. i can wait. but with this long of a wait it better be fucking good.)

hello! i am turning 29 on sunday 26th june, but i shall be up in london on sat 25th for the zine fest at the women’s library so i thought we should do something! like have a potluck picnic in the park afterwards! or if it rains, go to a pub.

time and place are versatile, the zine fest finishes at 4, so i thought starting sixish gives one time to pack up and travel across town. anyone got any suggestions / recommendations on location? i’m kinda thinking the bandstand on the south-west side of regent’s park (near baker street entrance) i know london fields is closer to women’s library but it’s a bit trickier to get to and from, especially if you don’t live in london.

we haven't had any nice post for a few days, so it was a nice surprise to find a letter with presents from quinn aka girlie guts from le tumblr. we did a trade, i sent her one of my zines & she sent me two word bracelets: feminist & queer, and a few extra little bits. though when i put on the queer bracelet, the elastic snapped and the beads went all over the place. i'll fix it laters, luckily i've got some elastic for my own bead thingies.

then carl came home and asked me how much i loved him, cos he had a present for me. well, actually, a few! twin peaks series one special edition box set! and episodes 2-7 + 11 of brideshead revisited as free dvds with daily mail a while ago. i've already got episode 1 disc somewhere. oh i love the oxfam.

i've got a day off and i'm already bored. i bought some alphabet beads off ebay the other day and they arrived today yaye! and i got some plain beads from work yesterday. i need some elastic though.. the set i got from work had some plastic thread but it ain't stretchy enough. think i'll get some from the sewing shop across the shopping centre during my break tomorrow.

i feel a little bit at loss. i had wednesday off too but i had a purpose. i went up to the college to put up posters for typical grrls, and then rochester and i bumped into a bunch of people i know and kinda socialized and all that. woah. but today, i have no such mission. i could tidy and do a whole load of washing but.. that's no fun. i am behind on distro stuff but...... FUN PITTA PIZZAS
serves 4
prep time: 15 minutes, plus defrosting time
cook time: 15-17 minutes

* 250g (½ x 500g) pack frozen mixed peppers* 100g smoked bacon lardons
* 6 wholemeal pitta breads
* 175g double concentrate tomato purée
* 2 x 125g packs basics mozzarella cheese ball, torn into pieces
* 100g tinned sweetcorn, drained
* 167g (½ x 335g) pack cherry tomatoes, quartered
* ½ x iceberg lettuce, shredded.

1. defrost the frozen mixed peppers for 1 hour, then pat them dry with kitchen paper.
2. preheat the oven to 200°c, fan 180°c, gas 6. heat a non-stick frying pan, then dry-fry the lardons for 5 minutes, until browned. remove from the pan and set aside.
3. using a knife, cut 6 wholemeal pitta breads in half horizontally and place on a baking tray, insides facing up. spread the tomato purée over the pitta halves. top with the bacon lardons, mozzarella cheese, sweetcorn, cherry tomatoes, peppers, arranged as you wish.
4. place in the oven and bake for 10–12 minutes, until the cheese is melted. serve with the shredded iceberg lettuce.

make it veggie… try swapping the bacon lardons for 200g sliced mushrooms, fried in a little vegetable oil.

i have no idea how this one happened.. flash + blue stage lights = weird shit.

seriously though, this band. i cannot cope. i need more. it has been so long since the last time (five years) and now that i've had a taste again i just want more. i've been looking at flights back home in july because they're playing at two festivals in the space of one week (so far, the 2nd one was only announced today.. tammerfest on 14th in tampere and some weirdy one in vasa on 15th.) blue1 looks fairly reasonable, under £350 for a return with two people, and unlike with ryanugh & easygit you get a checked in baggage included, so i can actually go home home. then again, i have no money whatsoever. but it would be awesome to do a little tour, for old times sake. i don't care for festivals but i'll take for whatever i can have at this point! i may or may not also be writing a zine about it all, the old times & now times.. no time like now i guess. i wish i could have my tattoo in time (yes, i've been planning a tattoo related to this fucking band for a while, so sue me. besides, it's not like i'm getting the logo on my forehead. it's some lyrics, possibly with a moomin drawing or something. still not sure on the details.) so i could show it to them, but there's no way in hell i could afford both. unless i win the lottery or something. but i can't even afford to play the damn thing.

i went to malmö this weekend with my friend jasmine to see my favourite band in the whole world for 'one last time', as they are splitting up after this tour / summer of festivals. and i tried to document the journey thoroughly. but of course, there was a lot of stuff i forgot to / couldn't take pictures of..

we went to our hostel & managed to check in way before actual check-in (like, 11am or something ridiculous like that, when real check-in is at like 4pm..) so we got dressed, and did our make up ready to go and queue

we went to brogatan afterwards, which jens recommended for a nice quiet sit down drink, though it was PACKED. especially considering it was 3am.

we walked around malmö doing some sightseeing of sorts & killing some time before we had to get the train copenhagen to catch our flight back. we found upside down trees, cool graffiti and an anarchist cafe (that really reminded me of the cowley club in brighton) but we took no pix there cos they had a no photography sign at the till. hmm.

my dinner on the train back to medway on sunday. somewhat dissappointing avocado salad (i should have got for the avocado salad SANDWICH) and hoummous with carrot sticks, from marks & spencers at reduced prices (yaye)

i met a student from canterbury on the train who also had grey looking green hair who had ACTUALLY HEARD OF THE ARK. seriously no one not from scandinavia i ever speak to knows who the fuck they are. though to be honest, she couldn't remember what they sound like, but she recognized the name from the eurovision. but still! anyway, she was pretty ace and i gave her the details for typical grrls & she said she'd come to the next one, and bring the feminist society along. aceness. i much prefer this welcome back to kent to my welcome back from birmingham zine fest. either way, i'm a big fat grump fest now, because IT JUST CAN NOT BE OVER. and on top of post fun sulk, my lady time started today. i'm gonna be so much fun for the next week, since on top of those two i'm worried sick cos i am so fucking broke now. it's a brilliant combo.

me & emma went out last night to moogie wonderland (obligatory typical grrls promoing aka, thrusting flyers to innocent moogie punters, + we like to support our friends efforts) and i accidently dressed like blossom, from the 90s sitcom blossom.

while we were there, some idiot actually asked me if i need my glasses. yes i do. i can see about as far 7 inches away. woah. my glasses make other people feel sick, even people who wear glasses for similar reasons. i've had glasses since i was ten, and had to sit in the front row at school and still couldn't read what was written on the blackboard. i know i dress like a hipster but hey! how rude of a question is that to ask someone whose friend you've been talking to for less than five minutes. apparently he was an optometrist or something but still! how rude. it's not like you ask someone with a walking stick if they actually need it. next time someone asks me this, i'll pass 'em my glasses and ask "what do you think?" and give them a death glare.

today has also given me reasons to be annoyed at dickheads but i won't get into that.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S PANCAKE DAY.

today i have not so much been celebrating internation women's day (every day is women's day to me!) but i have been making pancakes:

BANANA PANCAKES

* 55g/2oz butter, cubed
* 275g/9¾oz self–raising flour
* 1 tsp baking powder
* 2 free-range eggs
* 2 tbsp soft light brown sugar
* 300ml/½ pint whole milk
* 1 large banana, roughly chopped
* 1-2 tbsp sunflower oil
* 8 rashers rindless streaky bacon
* maple or golden syrup, to serve

1. preheat the oven to 110c/225f/gas ¼.
2. melt 25g/1oz of the butter in a small pan over a low heat and leave to cool for five minutes.
3. put the melted butter, flour, baking powder, eggs, sugar and milk in a food processor and blend until smooth.
4. pour into a large bowl and mash the banana into the batter with a potato masher.
5. melt a little of the oil with a cube of butter in a large non-stick frying pan over a medium heat. ~~wipe around the base of the pan with a thick wad of kitchen paper.~~ (i dont know what that bits all about.. i didn't do it.)
6. drop two or four large serving spoonfuls of the banana pancake mixture into the frying pan, spacing well apart. cook for ~~three minutes~~ (more like a minute and a half!) or until the pancakes rise, bubbles appear and the surface appears dry.
7. flip over with a palette knife and cook on the other side for a further ~~2-3 minutes~~ (minute and a half) or until pale golden-brown.
8. transfer to a heatproof plate and keep warm in the oven while you cook the remaining eight pancakes in exactly the same way.
9. return the frying pan to the heat and add the streaky bacon. cook for about three minutes on each side until golden and crisp, turning once. add a splash of oil if the rashers begin to stick.
10. pile the pancakes onto four warmed plates and top with the fried bacon. drizzle with a little maple syrup (or golden syrup) and serve the rest separately.

i got the recipe from here, but i skipped the bacon and syrup and found that three minutes cooking time was WAY TOO LONG (i burned half the pancakes) perhaps if you do it on lower heat.. either way, check the pancakes after about a minute and if they're brown enough, flip them!

i'm all pancaked up, i found this recipe for american style blueberry pancakes earlier from good food and i'm going to make them later but with raspberries. (cos english blueberries are rubbish, and overpriced. and i like raspberries. they're my favourite.)

in other news, i feel a bit shit and weepy as fuck and i think i should probably start taking my medication again. i haven't really taken it since i got my no babies implant put in a month + 1 day ago. i hadn't really noticed a difference until.. just now? i have also been watching the first series of roseanne and torchwood. and made some progress on my cardigan, i am now on the sleeves! i also really really like eating. food is awesome!

so.. the second typical grrls was thursday night. it was a definite improvement on the first one (i haven't written about it here in this blog because well, i wrote about it in the new zine and i didn't want to 'spoil' it or whatever but let's just say it wasn't exactly a raging success. which seven people and closing at half eleven cos no one had been there for an hour..) this time there was about 15-25 people, and we didn't know any of them. not really. familiar faces with no names or backstories attached. none of our friends could make it (except ellie, she came for about 45 mins & i played her bad romance which made emma make faces at me.) for various reasons, but that's cool (sort of) cos the people who came enjoyed it and bought some zines and donated some money to KRG and enjoyed our lady choons. i even got a request! for if u seek amy by britney cos i played do something but unfortunately i didn't have it. i told him i'll play it next time. my share of the bar takings paid for a big ass pile of distro post i dragged to the post office today.

we didn't take any other pictures. i'm guessing we felt too awkward about taking pix of strangers.

people like cake, there was two left at the end of the night & i got to take them home with me for carl (he didn't come, which is fine. he was pretty bored last time and he's no social animal anyway. not that i am either.) well, the other one was for me. them cakes were so incredibly pink! i don't think people realised that in the dim lighting of the bar.

i like to take pictures of me eating cake. and i like cake. cake is good.

my brother FINALLY managed to send me my kallio rolling rainbow / amnesty's joku raja campaign 2011 calendar (he was supposed to bring it with him when he visited a month ago but he forgot. obvs that runs in the family) and it arrived the other day!

it's got roller grrls & it's for charity against sexual violence. it's a double whammy i say. when i asked my brother to get me one he actually said he was going to get one for himself anyway, which kinda made me love him a bit (extra) unless of course he was going to get it to perve at roller girl which not so cool.

i suck at taking pictures at zine events. no really. i went to brighton for the brighton zine fest last weekend and these really are the only pictures i took (well, i dragged myself down to the pier to take some touristy photos, but that's a different lot) i had a really nice time though. i stayed at lianne's, and she was an excellent host. i went to the work shops on saturday but kinda missed all but the comic zines one that has somehow made me want to do one myself. well, that and tabling next to a fellow finnish lady who had done some awesome comix herself. i've gone and bought a nice new blank notebook and i've got a few ideas already. we'll see if i manage.

the distro's a bit off a mess. i was so sure i had put stuff aside for the unsent orders before i packed up for brighton but i can't fucking find the damn zines now and i sold out of a bunch of stuff. i'm gonna try to get everything in the post friday (i got stuff on their way already) and update the website sunday at the latest. i've got a whole lot of awesome new stuff! watch this space.

i have been a little bit busy and/or pre-occupied, with typical grrls and finishing my half of the your pretty face #14 split with here. in my head #7, i got cath's side in the post the other day & it's awesome ♥ ♥ ♥ still got a fair bit to do though, and the only chance i'll have to print it (and more copies of old issues) is tuesday, which is also carl's birthday! for once i'm actually on the ball regarding presents. i got some stuff on my break today, and ordered another thing off ebay when i got home. also got myself a wee present while i was at it. you'll see.

i've got a whole lot of stuff to write about but the most important first / for now:

the other day (tuesday) me and emma went to poco loco to ask if we could have the little riot grrl type club night we'd been thinking about for the past month or so (secretly, i didn't wanna say anything til stuff was actually happening) and they said yes! it's happening NEXT THURSDAY. it's a bit soon but it was the best week in february to do it, and we wanted to get started / make it happen ASAP. emma's left a load of flyers in some local establishments and we're going to the art college tomorrow afternoon to do some more flyering. there's also a facebook page, twitter and a tumblr of good things. add us for news and stuff!

in other news, i've been working on my split zine with catherine of here. in my head, and i have been back to derby, twice! just haven't got around to writing about it. oh well. also, my brother's coming round for a visit with his lady friend who i've never met and don't even know what she looks like on sunday for a couple of days and our flat is a tip so tomorrow is being dedicated to tidying. other than that trip to town with emma of course. busy bee, for now. the i've got to finish the zine and print it in time for the brighton zine fest (19th-20th feb) celebrate carl's birthday and make him epic cupcake and so much more. it's nice being busy, but it's also fucking exhausting.

today carl came home from oxfam with a motherfucking film scanner! i love that boy, and i love that place (they’re not allowed to sell electrical goods donations anyway..) it’s not brilliant (colours come out a bit wonky a lot of times..) but it works! this might just be the perfect excuse for me to get a new battery in my old film SLR and start taking REAL PHOTOS again. film just wins over digital at feel and texture and colour and stuff.

also, i have a bunch of stuff i haven’t got scanned anywhere anymore. you should see my fucking neg folder. i've been playing with my new toy a little...

i'll talk about shit another day.

KENT ROLLER GIRLS

i went to kent roller girls practice on sunday because a) it was in rochester (usual place in herne bay booked up for roller hockey or something) and in the afternoon rather than crack of dawn and b) we had a meeting about important stuff at alex' house beforehand. i made some tiny vegan cupcakes and most of them were eaten, even though they don't go with the roller derby work out meal plan.. then again, that didn't start til yesterday! i'd do it but.. a) i'm lazy and b) my wrist is still a wee bit too weak to trust me with any exercise that requires me to rest on my arm/hand strenght, and there's a fair bit of press ups and planks in that workout. maybe next time?

i was watching the others skate and i almost cried cos i wanted to skate so much too. (fuck almost, there was definitely a solitary emo tear rolling down my cheek as everyone else warmed up.) i've got a check up with the doctor next monday, if he says it's cool, i'll be back on skates the sunday after that! anyway, i took some pictures.

at some point last year i decided to start one of those 365 projects where you take a photograph every day. i think i lasted about a week and a half before i got bored and ran out of ideas / motivations. i guess at least one photo everyday was a little too ambitious for me. so i've decided to do one picture i am happy with each week for the next 52 weeks.

NEW YEAR, 'NEW' GOALS.

i was going to write a proper entry with my resolutions / goals / whatever for this year, but to be honest, they are more or less the same as last year. still working on stuff.

♥ write more. zines, stories, letters, blog entries. in both languages.
♥ spend less time on the internet doing fuck all.
♥ eat less frozen crap and more proper food.
♥ finish issue one of THE QUEEN IS FED, my cooking zine.
♥ be more sociable, get out more, see people, hang the fuck out with awesome locals etc etc instead of just sitting home on tumblr, even if carl doesn't want to come along.
♥ knit more, especially finish knitting the blue cardigan with hood / vintage bed jacket that i started knitting on christmas eve. i've done the back so far and i'm about 1/3rd through right front piece, like so:

♥ make more art. take real proper photographs, not just snaps of crap around the house / what i'm wearing. it's a waste of a good camera. even use the film slr again.
♥ find that new job i keep talking about. preferably not in retail, and preferably more money for less hours!
♥ go abroad. and preferably not just to go home.
♥ see the ark one more fucking time before it's too late.
♥ get better mental health.
♥ be a better girlfriend, as per usual.
♥ make that secret exciting project i can't tell you about yet actually happen.
♥ start a grrrl band. (a girl can dream, right?)
♥ finally get that first tattoo i keep banging on about.
♥ skate hard at roller derby and pass minimum skills.
♥ radically reduce my use of oppressive / ableist language (like crazy, mental, special..)
♥ reply to every single letter i get. even if it's just a post card saying "aww shucks." or something equally feeble.

i think that's it for now. still not making a resolution to stop smoking though. i'm going to get off the internet now and watch bruce parry hang out with shamans and knit knit knit. how i've missed that man.

- carl's dad went into the hospital only to come out very briefly and then go back again and never come out. i was there with carl's family when he passed away, it was really damn upsetting & unfair cos he was pretty young, and damn awesome dude. (read your pretty face #13 if you wanna know more)
- i fractured my wrist in 3 places and ended up being on sick leave for six weeks due to which i'm broke as fuck, overdrawn to the max and owe rent.

sure, the highlights list is longer than the lowlights but the lowlights were pretty much so craptacular they outweigh all the / any good stuff that happened. 2010 was a shit year. i want a fucking refund.

what about my resolutions for 2010, how did i do with them?

♥ write more in finnish - well, i started my finnish blog and then completely abandoned it after a few months. but i did start hipster mummot with sinikka a few weeks ago. so.. i guess i didn't really do that.
♥ write more in general - i managed to do 4 issues of your pretty face in six months. i guess that's writing more. but i was sort of hoping to do some fiction too.
♥ spend less time on the internet doing fuck all - no.
♥ eat less frozen crap and more PROPER food. - well. yeah. sort of.
♥ stop ignoring stuff and pushing it til later. or at least do it less. - doing a little better on this!
♥ worry less. - and this!
♥ be more crafty, knit and stuff. - most of the year, not really but lately yes!
♥ work on my teenage blah blah novel & my smiths fan vampire story. - no. still stuck as fuck. have manage to figure out plot for vampire story though, so i guess that's something.
♥ make a fucking brilliant queer/typical zinester stuff issue of YOUR PRETTY FACE without rushing it. if it's not ready in time for a zinefest, it's not. - well, life got in the way by giving me other things to write about so i haven't made this. but i didn't rush with the zines i did make (except maybe little with #12..) so i think i did pretty good.

♥ have better mental health - i would have done a lot better on this if 2010 hadn't served me such a shit sandwich.
♥ be a better girlfriend and be more comfortable with my own sexuality. - still working on this but getting there. SLOWLY.

oh and from that 'wish list' of things it would be cool if i could do this year, i accomplished fuck all. but i'm cool with that. i'll hold on to my list of new resolutions / goals for tomorrow / another day.

i was going to do that 2010 was crap, hope 2011 is better and have a look at how my resolutions / goals for the year went entry today but i didn't get around to it because i made really nice curry for dinner from my new cook book and made a rather failed baking experiment (brownie recipe does NOT make cupcakes. this may be obvious to all but me) and it's kinda late already. me and carl are going to drink navy rum & coke, watch a film (howl's moving castle, i think) eat the failed 'cupcakes' and hope for the best. guess i'll do that entry tomorrow then. i've got high hopes for next year..

i've just finished my wrapping par one item i need to finish off! though i have a strange nagging feeling i've forgotten something.. carl made us some nom as fuck chilli con carne with his best ever recipe, which i can't find on the internets anymore but it's in one of my zines. it's been a while since he's made it.

we're going to carl's mum's house tomorrow evening for the weekend. i'm planning to start knitting a proper big project while i'm there. i've just bought & downloaded the pattern for this cute as fuck bed jacket / cardigan from ravelry and i'm going to go buy some wool & possible new needles in town tomorrow before i go meet emma & natalie for coffee in rochester in the afternoon. i think i'm going to go for dark purple. i'm aware i've got a fuckload of wool at home, but not enough of the same colour and kind to make a cardi, they're more for little projects like mittens and berets. we'll see if i ever actually finish this one. i hope so. it'd be my first big thing i've finished knitting.. just need to stick to it whenever bored / watching telly.

y'all have a nice xmas weekend. i probably won't get on the internets again proper til we're back home. unless i manage to sneak on carl's mum's laptop while the boys play their new games or whatever.

i haven't been blogging here much lately. just haven't had much to say, felt much more at ease with the new other blog that i do with sinikka, more comfortable with finnish, cos i need finnish and it's all cold and snowy like home except not at all. i've been tumbling and knitting and filling distro orders and working less days and getting excited about things in fairly far future and started writing letters again after over two months of not writing any letters. my wrist still hurts, but i'm anxious to get back to derby practice, even if just to watch because i miss the company of other grrls. most of the christmas presents are done and i'm only working three more days this year (wednesday, next monday and next wednesday) carl put up the christmas decorations on saturday while i was at work, i'll probably take some pictures tomorrow while he's at oxfam christmas dinner at pizza express (christmassy isn't it?) i've started scribbling shit down for your pretty face #14 and i feel better about stuff, i think. worried about money but i try to not think about that too much because i'll just lose sleep over it and that will make me miserable. bed has been far too comfortable lately and i've been over staying in bed in the morning (it's not oversleeping if you're actually awake, just unable to coax yourself out of the bed) but 'luckily' the last few mornings i've had to go to work our front door has somewhat frozen shut overnight so i've had a good excuse for why i'm ever so slightly late. it's no fun trying to melt your door with a bob marley lighter first thing in the morning though.. swings and fucking roundabouts. i'm going to go make a cup of tea (for carl) and a cup of chocolate brownie hot chocolate for me, go hide under the duvet with carl and watch sherlock holmes. (for some reason carl thinks i hate guy richie films. this is false, i have actually yet seen a film by him i didn't enjoy. & i've seen most of them..)

i bought myself a wee ~~christmas~~ present from work on sunday, the Hello Kitty Magazine Maker, which i think might be the best piece of hello kitty merch i've ever seen. then again, i'm a zinester, i would think that. it's not as awesome as i expected though, the page sheets are made of this horrid shiny paper that smudges really easily cos its high gloss. but i'm just gonna photo copy them anyway for zine purposes / collage on them. and it comes with cute as fuck stamps and LOADS OF STICKERS. like 150, so it's not all bad. probably not quite worth the tenner but who cares. and i got 25% off anyway so not all bad! and there's a cute sticker of hello kitty with a bandage that is so going on my derby helmet, after all i am the injury queen. and i'm kinda tempted use almost nothing but this kit for the layout of YOUR PRETTY FACE #14. best or worst idea ever?

in other news, me and my dear friend sinikka started a little fashion & stuff blog called HIPSTER MUMMOT, cos that's how we dress. like hipster grannies. it's mostly in finnish but we've decided to include little english translations on the bottom of each entry so less people are left out due to the language barrier. and besides i don't think google translate can handle my finnish anyway. i write like i talk. translating machines can't handle finnish anyway.

in second lot of other news i've been working for four days straight and i've got one more day to go before 2 days off, one day in, one day off and then it's next week and i don't know yet. really hoping for not 5 days in a row. i've still got chrimbo shopping to do and my bank has fucked up my overdraft. but hopefully i'll get that sorted thursday. i'm very very tired. and it's my bedtime. off to fill my hot water bottle again!

THE WORST NEWS

THE ARK, my favourite band EVER have decided to split up. they are doing a farewell tour in the spring & summer but i expect it will be the usual scandinavian route, no angleterre. as usual i am skint as fuck and i don't expect the situation will change by march. i am making epic sadface. thank fuck i don't have to go to work tomorrow, not til saturday. i can spend all day wallowing and listening to nothing but the ark. i looked at the calendar & some old gig photos and realised today is actually exactly 10 YEARS & 10 DAYS since i first saw them and truly madly deeply fell head over heels with this band. it's like they read my brain and then write their fucking songs. well, maybe not every single one of their songs but so many. and so often things i didn't even realise i was thinking.

i haven't seen them since april 2007 because being grown up and out of college doesn't mesh well with following bands around. though they haven't been as active as before i guess. i've only really missed one album's worth of touring. but still. i was pretty upset last spring & summer when all my friends back home went to see them and i was here, privately hating england.

i've been thinking about making a zine about my stupid silly amazing rocknroll adventures for a while, i guess there is no time like now? but to make it now in time to give to the boys or after all is over and send a copy to them when it's finished, or both = make two zines?

YOUR PRETTY FACE IS GOING STRAIGHT TO HELL #13 & #12 (in order of appearance)

i actually finished / printed #13 THE DAY BEFORE i fractured my wrist, so the damn things have been sitting in my skates' box unassembled. which was really bloody frustrating, especially since it had taken me three, four months to put pen to paper and shit and then i couldn't share it with anyone. #13 is about the first half of 2010 which wasn't the greatest time. full of loss and grief and feeling crappy. for some reason i don't feel comfortable saying why on my blog but putting it all zine seems to be ok.

#12 is about when i fractured my wrist at roller derby and my time off and stuff. there's not much else i can say to describe it!

as you may have figured out from what i just said, #13 was written before #12. but i decided to swap the numbers around because i thought #13 appropriate thanks to the misery. who knew i'd be so unlucky the day after printing! well, what's done is done.

our upstairs neighbour gave me this doll a couple of months ago because apparently it looks just like me. haven't really had a chance to take a picture of it until now and besides, i think the snowy backgrounds much better than anything else ever anyway.

it snowed a fuckload tuesday night and it continued snowing ALL WEDNESDAY. me and carl went out to town yesterday when it seemed to be official snow day. half the places in town were already shut at 4pm. including my work. which was a shame cos i was gonna go buy me some leopard print wellies! my old wellies have come apart in a crucial seem around my ankle.

it's been a while since i've made a proper blog post. not much has been going on, well other than i got my cast of a couple of weeks ago andi went back to work on monday. they've cut down on my hours now though cos i'm sharing days with my replacement. but that's cool, that means i get to actually breathe and have days off during the week. i don't really give a shit about the weekend anyway. it's not like i go out or anything. and i can do grown up things on weekday days off, like go to the post office or pay rent or whatevs. it's a shame about moneys though... this week i worked monday, tuesday and wednesday and i'll be working tomorrow. next week it's monday, wednesday and the weekend. it's been a whole lot less scary being back than i expected.

i've been working hard the last couple of days to get vampire sushi re-opened. i decided to even revamp the website (cos that's how i roll) today i have been writing descriptions and stuff. all i really need to do is scan all the new zines and boom. though there are the few unsent orders from before. they're all ready to be posted now, and i was going to go to the post office today but decided against it because a) its fucking cold, and b) royal mail is going to take ages delivering them anyway cos they're all up to their whatevers in snow. england's not so good with dealing with snow, incase you hadn't heard. but i'm definitely posting them and anything else i've got to post on tuesday which is my next weekday off. not much point going to the post office on my break tomorrow, they wouldn't go anywhere anyway. so yeah, planning a grand re-opening tonight or this weekend. i expect this weekend. i've re-organized the distro corner and it's all nice and organized (no shit, sherlock) and with these weekdays off i should be more able to keep on top of distro shit, even at christmas time (remember last year? it was a fucking NIGHTMARE) i think i'm off to the shop to buy some pie & sweetpotato mash for dinner. we'll see what's left in the shop, yesterday there was no bread and no plain normal potatoes at all!

my friend emma kindly scanned a film for me i had sitting around for ages unprocessed & all. i snuck into uni on my day off i can't remember when now to develop it. i really should get back in to film, i just really prefer the feel/look of it. even when it's not exactly perfect. you know, it's a bit out of focus or the flash is all fucked up etc. when that happens in digital it just looks SHIT, but in film it's ok. i don't really understand why that is.. need to do some arty shit in film.

i started watching the body earlier but it was too sad. i actually started crying, for real. like it was real. can’t handle that much emo right now, maybe tomorrow. been watching too much buffy anyway. i shall watch some doctor who instead, while i work on the words for your pretty face #12. i’ve already got at least 16 page worth of text and there’s so much i haven’t written about. started working on it the day before yesterday i think. by this rate, i might even finish it in time for alternative press fair. two weeks.. that'd be two zines in less than two months. i might as well use my time off doing something other than just watching buffy, sulking and sleeping..

the sad thing is that i had a big full halloween weekend planned (party at a friend’s house tonight, gig organized by another friend on saturday and dressed up roller derby practice on sunday) but now it seems very much like i’m doing absolutely nothing at all, AS USUAL. my halloween plans always fall through, which is so not fair since it is my favourite holiday. i guess me & carl will just go on a horror film binge or something.. stupid fucking arm. 2010 officially blows. but i did get some good news today so hopefully that goes well and 2011 will be a year of new super exciting things!

since i cant do any of the thing i normally would when bored (scribble / doodle / knit / cook / bake) i have been re-watching buffy the vampire slayer from the beginning. i'm already approx halfway through season 2. and as i have a super short attention span, ive also been screencapping which has been extra fun since i have finnish subtitles. it just feels right and homely. its like im in my old bedroom, sitting on my bed, surrounded by fairylights and marilyn manson posters watching it on my nan's old woodfronted telly.

i fractured my right wrist at today's derby practice. it hurt so bad i cried. i've never broken or fractured a bone before. i'm already missing having use of my right arm. using the computer is so awkward. i can't fold & put together your pretty face #13 which i printed 60 copies of yesterday. how frustrating is that? luckily i put together about 10 copies last night before we went to abi & alex's for dinner. i can't write or draw, and i can't knit. what shall i do? read, i guess.

i'd write more but it's too flipping awkward. i miss my right arm already. don't know how i'm gonna cope! i never realised how much i need my right hand for on a regular basis.

i went to my first roller derby bout on saturday, featuring london roller girls.

SUFFRAJETS VS. STEAMROLLERS

HARBOUR GRUDGES VS. ULTRAVIOLENT FEMMES

steam rollers won 148 - 66, and harbour grudges won 168 - 42.

it was awesome. i went with my friend jasmine with whom i spent most of my first year with, despite the fact she was in london. we used to go to a whole lot of libertines gigs.. i hadn't realised she was in anyway into derby until she texted me on my way to birmingham that she wanted to come to the bout with me. didn't think she was the type. she's much more sensible & grown up than me. she's gonna start training soon too, she's just got the gear etc.. it was weird going to a sporting event (me, the least sporty person in the world!) but goddamn i love derby. i also went up 2 laps on sunday, despite falling over and having serious trouble getting back up! i did almost 22 laps (21 3/4) in five minutes. need to be able to do 25 to qualify, as i may have mentioned. go me. the fact that demi loosened my wheels up a bit may have helped. i'm hella useless at hip checks though.

my favourite thing i found on the internet. that is the BEST EVER derby name + number, don't you agree? apparently she also tosses free tampons to fans. love it.

i had my first derby practice today with my very own skates. not bad, not bad. did blocking and checking (whacking people with your shoulder to knock em out. AWESOME. me and hannah really went for it, i think we might both be pretty fucking bruised up in a few days. being gentle was just no fun) and i did only 19 3/4 laps in five minutes which is down from last weeks 20. poo. but i managed to master cross overs going counter clockwise without even trying! so it's swings and roundabouts.

what else? i've been feeling a little low this weekend, even friday when i had a much appreciated DAY OFF. too much crying and shit. poo at that. but i feel much better today. i had derby and got to get off some aggro / pent up energy, i guess. in other news, i'm pretty close to being finished with your pretty face is going to hell #13, it should be printed the weekend after next (i'm going to london to see an LRG bout on saturday so i won't be able to print it this week.) and i will be printing / finishing off the vampire sushi comp in the next few days, printing after work. EVERY SINGLE VAMPIRE SUSHI ORDER IN THE MONTH OF OCTOBER WILL RECEIVE A FREE COPY OF VAMPIRE SUSHI #1, just so you know.. it's a good month to order something! oh and i finally put together some grab bags from the pruning of my zine collection. 10 zines per bag, and this is the best of the bunch. more info on the vampire sushi tumblr.

i finally bought me my own skates yesterday. good olde work discount. now me, ellie & ruth are skate triplets. i also emailed demi and asked her to register my derby name and number. hurrah.

today i did something i'd been sort of talking about for a while; destroyed my copy of new moon for being shit. emma was there to take photographic evidence. actually i sort of did it by accident, and though "fuck it, lets rip it proper!" i feel a little bad for doing it because it was a christmas present from carl's brother, one i had actually picked myself (the pickings were very slim for the 3 for 2 offer in waterstones. it was either that or russell brand's booky wook. i wish i'd gone for russell's book. what i really wanted was 'let the right one in' or a cook book but those were not in the deal. boo!) i could have taken it to a charity shop but i didn't want to inflict its shitness on any other poor soul. even if the proceeds were going to charity. but you know what. i'm gonna keep the destroyed book. to remind me to write better than that, or something. i should be able to manage that.

i made some flyers for the compilation zine to hand out at birmingham zine fest last weekend. managed to get rid of most of them. and today we received our very first submission! i was so excited to find it in our inbox, and it's fucking excellent too! but we need more, more more more! i spoke to / pestered a lot of ace peeps to do something and if they come through and managed to do what they said they would in time, it will be the most excellent thing ever. srsly. but end of september is getting dangerously close, so get moving & doing if you want to submit someone. we need you!

i was thinking about stuff i could do at work today while listing a ton of new halloween outfits on, ranging from kids ghoul outfits to bloody surgeon and sexy witches. though of course all the ladies' costumes were more or less sexy this and sexy that as always. sigh. but there was the most precious little bat costume for toddlers that made me jealous. i wish i was three, i would wear it all the fucking time, like those little girls who always wear their snow white costume or whatever. they are also thee most precious thing ever. kids are awesome. except when they are screaming their heads of outside my office door and they stay there for half an hour cos their mum's are too busy shopping for baby toys. ugh.

ach. just got back from birmingham zine fest. had such a lovely welcome back on the way home from the station to meet carl on the high street, cos he was only half way to the station when the train arrived. a bunch of 13 year olds for the lack of better word chavvy girls accosted me with nonsensical remarks about my appearance or whatever, wouldn't let me go past them and then grabbed the end of my fucking granny trolley! bitches. some bloke across the street told them to leave me alone and eventually they let go and carl was there. i was so thrown by the experience i sort of started silently weeping when we were far enough for them not see. i had just been thinking how i had such a nice weekend even though it hadn't gone exactly to plan (less dancing & socializing than intended though i did make a bunch of new friends!) and thinking "oh i kinda wanna move to birmingham, i could make things happen there cos there will be more than ten people into the same shit as me." to be honest i get that feeling every time i go on zine adventures. except maybe london. cos i know london is just too much. i'd be a really tiny fish in a massive pond. i prefer big fish in a medium pond or even just medium fish in any size pond.

i was just downloading friday's eastenders so me and carl can watch it. i was on the coach everytime it's been on this weekend. we had meat & chips for dinner and i had 32 new emails. no vampire sushi ones :S but i'm back full of silly ideas and hope!

first day back was ok. it was just me getting shit done in the office. answered almost a week's worth of stupid questions and had someone be a dick at me, yay. back to normal. boss not in for two weeks, yaye. fuck load of shit that needs to be put on, seriously, you can hardly move from boxes of crap. but i'll be fine, i'm sure. apparently i was missed, well, wished i was there so someone wouldn't have to do it all himself. ha! maybe he'll appreciate what i do a bit more. i don't just sit around and twiddle my thumbs, y'know. it did go fucking slow though. ugh. maybe tomorrow i'll actually get to attack the boxes of shit..

anyway. carl's playing harry potter lego. he's finished it actually, but you know how lego games are, you do all the levels and you've finished 45% or something. he's looking for some evil characters. blah. i was gonna make him watch män som hatar kvinnor with me but it's a bit late now. especially since there's still some crap i need to do, like make a new cover for your pretty face #10, since someone lost the flats. and it's a bit of a pain to try copy anything that's printed on red paper.. thought i'd change it completely as i found a picture that's actually super appropriate for it! yes, more appropriate than joey ramoney with a kitty cat. sort of.

we went to carl's house on friday and i took some pictures in the garden cos i was a little bit bored of watching boys play call of duty, again.

somehow i thought i would have posted more on here while i've been on holiday, what with having ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD. but i guess i thought wrong. i also thought i'd do more cooking and baking (for the same reason) but i didn't really. at least i managed to do five out of the six things i mentioned last sunday. well, i guess four and a half since i hung out with sophie but not meg :S yeah, on tuesday i met up with sophie at the command house and we drank a bottle of wine and discussed true blood very very thoroughly.

sophie found some ball in a cup type thing on the floor. except instead of a cup it was a dragon's mouth. huh?

shannon also come to meet us just before we decided it was time to head homeward.

on the way home i got some nice takeaway curry for dinner from my favourite place just around the corner from the house because i had a hankering for peshwari naan. i got my heart set on it when we thought we might stay out until after tesco closing time, and i just had to have some.. nom i loves it.

i'm all derby'd up and derby'd out at the same time. i wish i had my very own skates already so i could spend all of my holiday skating around the lines and getting used to the extra height and being on wheels. yep. i'm off work for a whole week. feels weird. i've got a bunch of things i want to do, like:

♥ print more zines. mainly more #10's & #11's.
♥ cook and bake proper, since i've got the time.
♥ hang out with sophie & meg.
♥ get vampire sushi distro in order, to be messed up again by tabling at the birmingham zine fest in couple of weeks. it's a big fat mess after a zine event.
♥ tidy up the bedroom & hopefully get it sorted in other ways too.

#3; on saturday me & carl made an epic journey to MADE zine/art fest in tunbridge wells. it included a bus to maidstone and then another to tunbridge wells through pretty villages full of houses that looked like they'd been there for hundreds of years, covered in vines and other greenery and crumbling graveyards. pretty.

we were kinda so bored we drew all this on the 'wall' behind us. though to be honest we were supposed to do that anyway.

it was pretty quiet & carl was pretty restless & bored, which kind made me extra restless & bored too. i guess tunbridge wells isn't the zine capital of the world.. i think we sold about £20 worth zines, which left us £5 profit after the bus & tea and cakes. i won't count the KFC we had when we got home to the equation as we had to eat anyway.. the journey back took absolute ages because when we got to maidstone we went to sainsburys to get some salad, ciders & breakfast for sunday and when we got back to the bus station we'd just missed the last 101 (fast bus) for an hour, turns out they're not every 15 minutes after 7pm on a saturday.. so we had to get the 135/155 which went through aylesford and all sorts of weird little village types between maidstone and chatham including going round rochester. it took more than twice as long! it was definitely the scenic route. it was pretty. kent is so nice and twee and i ended up living in the least twee place in whole of kent. srsly. then again, tunbridge wells was a little bit too nice, proper, posh / middle class for me. we watched the nice middle class kids talking about going out for the night and i just really missed gobby chavs fightin on bus stops shoving each other in the semi busy road. (true story down the street from mine. on a thursday night few months ago) keepin' it real or whatever. i know i always moan about chatham but i think i do kinda secretly love it. it's just the kinda place i'm from.

our computer decided to die temporarily yesterday. it's done it before so we know how to fix it but it's probably gonna take a few days. doubt i'll get to see true blood until next week now! that is actually my main woe. & distro stuff. especially since i got a load of new ones in the post today! well, re-stocking old favourites. oh well. i was feeling a little restless yesterday. but luckily we did a very bargainlicious shopping trip to tescos and got almost enough food for the rest of the week, well at least a couple of days, for £9, including two fancy finest pizzas that should have been £9 all together. nom nom. had one of those last night. tonight i'll make some risotto with chicken, peas & parma ham.

i guess in a way computer death has so far been productive. i scribbled 6 pages of #12 in my notebook and loads all over a sheet i'd printed off the computer on sunday with the little i had managed to type in the last too months. getting there now. i'm gonna ring mama on the way to tesco, ask her to send me some childhood photos and stuffs.

so yeah. don't you worry if you don't hear from me for a while. its just a little bit of temporary computer death. though knowing how things usually go, i'll probs be back on tomorrow or later tonight cos carl's found the special different operating system disc (it's really windows that's dead, not the computer..) & carl posted a bunch of vampire sushi orders today. can't remember which ones i gave him. i think it was all but one or something along those lines..

a few months ago i decided to start embroidering slogans on underpants. but as usual i got distracted and only finished about two pairs and ended up wearing them myself like i do. maybe i should start again. would any of y'all want them? + any suggestions on "slogans"? nothing too long though. i only have limited patience.

i'm very very tired. been out two nights in a row. asked tonight too but i can't cope with any more socializing. i've had like.. three months fill in three days. feel crappy. skipping roller derby tomorrow because i'm a massive loser. still didn't manage to go to the printers. there's a zine thing in tunbridge wells next saturday. we'll see. had a look at train tickets (£12 return) and emailed the organisers cos i realised they never ever got back to us about it in the end.

yesterday i went out to rochester because one of the ladies from work had turned forty on tuesday. there was drinks. laughing. almost karaoke. a lot of pictures (i had the pocket camera i started taking photos about 15 years ago with me, so i can't post them til i process the films. whenever that is.)

i made naan bread from scratch today. it was okay. i really wanna start writing #12 but i'm scared of it.

i had an idea at work today that me and carl should make a little horror themed art zine for halloween etc & to celebrate vampire sushi’s 1ST BIRTHDAY. and then i thought “why keep the fun all to ourselves, WE SHOULD MAKE IT A COMPILATION ZINE!”

so yes, we are looking for submissions! drawings, photographs, collages, embroidery, anything! also considering horror stories and reviews of horror films! the zine will be quarter size / a6 but your piece doesn’t have to be necessarily, we’re perfectly able to resize things on the photocopier.

the main theme is vampires (of course) but other monsters & horror creatures / themes are welcome too. anything related to twilight is not welcome, unless its taking the piss out of sparkly ‘vampires’.

we'd especially love zinesters we distro to take part in this compilation.

DEADLINE IS SEPTEMBER 26TH 2010.

"TOO BAD WE'RE SO STUPID."

i'm sorry. i'm all true blooded up. just finished watching sunday's episode and it was probably first one that didn't literally end with me gasping in horror / surprise and swearing at the bastard program. it was a nice change. and didn't make the episode any less zomg. but i shan't spoil nothing. surely these caps aren't really that spoilery. if at all.

i have now 'read' all of the books so far. well, listened to audiobooks of the first nine, and actually old skool proper read dead in the family. half way through a touch of dead now, a collection of short stories from times in between the books. not sure what i'm going to do after i finish it. maybe old skool read from the beginning? that's what the library is for i guess.

funnily enough, when i went to the library last week to get a touch of dead, i was served by the same lady as when i got dead in the family. we'd had a little chat about the books (she found them a bit too... racy & gorey, so she prefers twilight herself) last time and she asked me if it was vampires that i liked or.. and then proceeded to tell me about this book her daughter was reading she thought i'd like. "shall i reserve it for you?" of course i said yes. turns out it is called abraham lincoln, vampire hunter. i've only just googled it, apparently it's by the same bloke who wrote pride and prejudice and zombies. which carl got me for christmas or valentine's day. (he knows how i feel about zombies, and vampires) not a masterpiece, but entertaining enough. we'll see. i'm sure it will be a giggle. let's call it research, shall we?

i feel a little lost since i finished my distro to do list. especially since hardly anyone's got back to me. woesome. i've had a few new zines in the post again and i've fallen a little bit a lot in love with some. sigh. i guess waiting for other people to act is almost as frustrating as waiting for me to act. especially as there is ABSOLUTELY NOTHING I CAN DO ABOUT IT. while when it's me, i can. well, who else can?

i had a bit of a tiff with carl earlier. i was cranky and tired when i got off work and i guess i took it out on him a bit. and he wasn't in the best of moods to start with. so we've just.. left each other alone today. got the grumps for one reason or the other.

on saturday emma cut my hair & dyed some of my hair blue. i would post a picture, but there isn't one i fully like yet. i can't find either of my goddamn digital cameras, and the ones i took on my polaroid didn't come out so good.. emma also took one after she'd finished, but yeahh.. i want my own one. eventually my things will seize hiding from me! seriously. i am well pissed off.

i played with a lot of kittens this weekend. first with emma's ma's new kittens who very very shy, so they'd play but wouldn't cuddle, and on sunday with ellie's housemate's kitty i've forgotten the name of who is much less shy now. more of an attention whore really. bless him. it's good kittens don't have very sharp claws though. happiness is a kittycat.

(this is mainly this long cos i'm bored / making up for long absence. not that anyone's probably noticed / minded anyway. )

almost there. i feel so fucking accomplished. perhaps tomorrow i'll manage to finally make some copies of my sort of 24h zine. and more of #10. and some other stuff. doing something very very exciting tomorrow. you'll see what i'm talking about very soon. i want it to be a surprise. i've managed to tell far too many 'in the real world' already. spoilers, bloody spoilers.

i've been a little quiet on the zine front lately. sorry. been busy. sort of. well, highly distracted by shit. writing letters. tumblring. distro to do listing. blah blah blah. i'll probably write about it laters. i think i'm gonna go watch pineapple express yet again with carl and write some more letters. x

THE PAIN IN MY BUM.

i've got a doctor's appointment at one on the subject of le coccyx. i feel like such a sissy* for complaining about it (or made to feel like one, whatever) but it does still hurt. to sit. to lie down, even on my belly and to stand. not massively, i can live with it. but i just don't wanna make it worse, and i need a professional to tell me, so i don't feel bad about not going to the roller derby practise tomorrow. it's only the second one though, how much do i suck? after all the introduction sheet did say something along the lines of 'if you can't commit, don't do it'. though it did also say to take a break if i need it, physically or mentally. o hai guilt. i wish i at least had a bruise to show for my injuries. my legs only stopped killing me wednesday..

i just found out that there's a helsinki roller derby team too! and a bunch of my old friends from the olden days of finnish riot grrl are on it. oh small world. and they've got a blog. i just love their logo:

it's based on havis amanda, an iconic bronze statue/fountain in kauppatori (market square) in helsinki. how ace can a logo be?

since there's no derby for me this weekend, i've decided to do my 24h zine instead. i kinda started last night, typed one page and realised i have no glue and no idea where any of my scissors are so i left it. i'll start when i get back from the doctors & glue shopping. oh and apparently some fizzy pop insence from the bong shop..

*the least misogynist/anti-female term i could think of. why is untoughness verbalised by feminine words? c'mon, women give birth and bleed monthly and all that shit. if that ain't tough, i don't know what is. i hate the english language sometimes. sigh.
