ZINE READING + WORKSHOP THIS SATURDAY!

this saturday (may 12th) we are hosting a little zine reading + zine workshop at coFWD in rochester! if you're anywhere near by, or willing to/can travel here, you should totally come! tukru & emma (of fanzine ynfytyn) will be reading from their zines and then pieces from some of their favourite zines! then we are gonna do a wee workshop with general talk about zines and show how to make them, including practical bits like layout ideas, making flats and printing tips. and we'll also make a little workshop compilation zine!

you can visit medwayzines.tumblr.com for more info AND zine related things, and there's also a facebook event page if that's your thing.

as the venue isn't a so called public space you'll need to book your place in advance, which you can do here. booking is free cos well, the cost of the workshop is going to depend a bit on how many people turn up! but officially it's £2+ donation on the day. you can also email us at vampiresushidistro@gmail.com and confirm through there if the eventbrite page doesn't work for you for some reason. the eventbrite page also has the exact location and i will be emailing directions etc to all participants before hand.

i just totally copied this from the vampire sushi website (because i think if i tried to re-write it again i doubt i'd ever get this post out in time!) I CANNOT BELIEVE I HAVE NOT POSTED ABOUT THIS ON MY VERY OWN BLOG. what is wrong with me??

i'm super excited about the workshop but i am also so fucking nervous. i'm so scared no one is going to turn up, or that i will mess up and it will go horribly wrong and no one will ever want to make zines or anything. though i'm 90% sure it won't go quite that bad. i mean, not all of those thing will happen in one go. right? luckily i've got emma coming along to help me and she's run some zine workshops before at brighton zine fest. and i suppose nerves are good, and expected in such situation, right? i just feel so unprepared.. i got so excited though when i visited the space last month and booked the space & time. i really hope it goes well and maybe we can do it again sometime.

so yeah, if you're in medway area, or are willing to travel here this saturday, you should come!

KISSANAINEN.

i finally bought me a leopard print skirt. or actually, i bought two!

i randomly remembered last night how i needed one in my wardrobe (hi tumblr friends!) and i was considering buying this one from asos, but i went shopping after work today and found these two gems, from select for £10 and from primark for £4, respectively. kinda loved the shopping experience in select. there are some awesome ladies working there. and i enjoyed the fact that their sizes seem to be a little more generous than primark (size 16 vs primark's size 20) which is always nice. i think i will definitely go back. actually, i just realised my leopard print dress is also from there! perhaps it's the best place for leopard print.

in other news, i started blogging again in finnish with my friend zola ♥ ♥ at hipstermummot.blogspot.com. we've started and abandoned blogs with the same name before but this time it's gonna last, honest. and i have been taking quite a few outfit photos for it, even though this time we've decided it's not a fashion / style blog. it's whatever everything anything we feel like blog, but in finnish. here's some of my lovely outfits so far.

i must confess, i'm still wondering if a fez would be considered cultural appropriation.. it's not exactly a spiritual object like a head dress, which definitely would be very uncool, but.. it is part of a classic middle eastern / north african stereotype constantly used in olden days. i don't know. perhaps i should go by the rule of 'if you think it might be iffy, it probably is.' it's just i like my fez. carl found it while tidying in february, apparently it was a present for christmas 2 years ago, except he hid it and forgot about it. but i can always just.. not wear it. i have pondered about this on tumblr before, but no one has replied.. if fezzes are indeed uncool, let me know and i will put it on the shelf and pretend the doctor left it here or w/e.

QUICK NOTE: ZINE TABLING AT LADYFESTeastLONDON

i made some new flyers for vampire sushi and i've also tinkered with some stencils and gone & printed some garishly bright pink patches. i will be at ladyfestEASTlondon with the distro in approx 14hrs (i'd normally say tomorrow, but it's technically tomorrow already) i'll be bringing the patches i have so far and of course all the zines in the distro!

i've got monday off, i might make a proper update then. but i thought i'd let y'all know about the ladyfesting.

SIXTEEN CANDLES / SIXTEENTH ISSUE / MY SUPER SWEET SIXTEEN

YOUR PRETTY FACE IS GOING STRAIGHT TO HELL #16 is finally done and printed and all that. it's been 9 months since #15 and while that's not that long really, it feels like way too long for me. and this zine has been 'almost finished' for almost 2 months, so i'm happy that it's finally done. i write about turning thirty (which i'm still not) being together with the same person for seven years, other sevens, my trip to the tooting zine fest and writing letters. it's the usual £2 for a quarter size zine, with 36 pages if my maths are right.

i've added the zine to the vampire sushi distro website along with a couple of other zines, but if there's nothing else you want from the distro and you live in the uk, you can also buy with the paypal link below for £2.50 inc postage. if yr outside uk, you might as well get your postage's worth and order some other zines too!

as usual, i will also do trades as long as they are fair!

WHAT I WORE TODAY

WHAT I WORE TODAY.

t-shirt from NEW LOOK (boys section i think, in a sale last year)
knitted mini skirt from PRIMARK (£1 bargain rail)
striped cardigan used to be carl's little brother's
with my FIGHT BOREDOM patch on the sleeve
fuck if i know where i got these tights, shoes from primark

(not 100% keen on the 2nd picture due to double chin but fuck flattering and besides, you can see the outfit better)

now that carl found my little digital camera again, i can take outfit photos by placing it on the book shelf, turning all the lights on and using the 10sec self timer.

this has more or less been my constant outfit at home since last week when i bought this skirt in but with blue in it. i loved it so much i bought another one. it's ridic short and only just about covers my bottom but who cares since i always wear pants AND hella thick tights. usually two pairs even. though it's getting warmer so i manage with 1 x tights too. no seriously that's how you wear skirts in the winter, layer on the tights. actually warmer than wearing jeans <3 not that it gets THAT cold in kent, but the winds are a bitch.

GIRLS TO THE FRONT

hey! i've got some last minute 'i'm gonna be tabling somewhere with vampire sushi!!!' news. tomorrow i'll be tabling at the girls to the front by sara marcus book reading & signing organized by girls get busy & storm in a teacup, and it might even be that i'll have some copies of your pretty face is going straight to hell #16 hott off the press. i've only got a couple more pages to do and i'm hoping they'll be done tonight and i can make some copies quick after work tomorrow before heading up to london town.

i'm rather excited. i only just got my copy of girls to the front on monday so i haven't read it yet but what i have read so far is pretty acetastic and i think i might actually keep a highlighter (or possibly a crayon) on me while reading it because it seems to be full of good quotes / stuff to remember.

We are so excited and proud to be teaming up together to present this amazing event for the wonderful Sara Marcus.

Sara will be talking about her well renowned book 'Girls to the Front' and the Riot Grrrl movement, which will be followed by rousing discussion.
Merchandise will be available to purchase, and be sure to bring along your copy of GttF because Sara will be doing book signings in the last hour. Merch stall by The Feminist Library and zine distro by Vampire Sushi.

"Sara Marcus’s Girls to the Front is not only a historical rockument of the revolutionary 90s counterculture Riot Grrrl movement, which birthed the DIY feminist punk scene, but also a rousing inspiration for a new generation of empowered rebel girls to strap on guitars and stick it to The Man." - Vanity Fair

SISTERS ARE FOREVER.

happy international women's day! i'll start with the good stuff. in honour of 101st international women’s day tomorrow, i have decided to donate 11% of all orders from vampire sushi distro for the rest of march to oxfam’s international women’s day fund since we didn’t get around to organizing our own tea party for it! here’s the rushed poster i made the other night for the tea party at the chatham oxfam..

though as per usual i have spent a large chunk of the day being grumpy at cisdudes going "what about international men's day?" *rolls eyes* (though i did manage to pop into town for distro post, buy a dress & a knitted miniskirt, and have a cup of coffee and some homemade cake at oxfam with the old ladies + a tammy annual from 1973 for zine stuffs) first of all it's not funny or clever, and it's the oldest 'joke' ever. and second of all besides all other days of the year essentially being dedicated to you lovely white cisdudes, if you did some simple googling you would know that international men's day is november 19th, so shut the fuck up. i may have told this to an old and quite dear friend from uni on facebook today but more politely. and also made a 2nd comment that i was VERY DISAPPOINTED IN HIM, though i deleted it straight after cos i'm a sissy and i hate confrontation, but unless he's disabled his notifications he knows. it felt kinda good calling him out because i spend SO MUCH TIME grinding my teeth at people and not saying anything because i dislike arguments. though mostly because i am bad at arguments and don't want to lose especially when i know for a fact i'm in the right but am unable to articulate my argument sufficiently to educate my adversary.

here's a pair of accurate donna noble gifs via the wonderful world of tumblr.

and here be a quick international women's day themed mix i cooked up.

more zine festing for me. i was trying to finish your pretty face #16 for this but that didn't happen either. it's almost done though, and i think i'll be taking pre-orders tomorrow if anyone wants it. i've got a good feeling i might finish it next week. or the week after at the latest. i've got the week after next offskies. i only just realised that. i know february is the shortest month but it always seems a whole week shorter instead of 2 or 3 days. next friday i'm off to glasgow to see my dear lori and finally meet her little queenie isabella. i've been a busy bee in a social sense lately.

refresh your page a hundred times / to see if you'd updated..

it's been a while since i've made a proper blog post. fuck apologies, i haven't had much to say. well, i have, but i haven't really known how to say it here. i've been working on your pretty face #16 so i guess i've been saving a lot of my words for that. and less well thought spouts of word vomit & random shitty pictures have been going under the personal/tukru perkele! tag on my tumblr.

wednesday was carl's 29th birthday! we'll be the same age until the end of june. here's some lo-fi instagram pictures of the celebrations.

i got my valentine's day presents yesterday (only two days late! for various reasons..) but they were totally worth the wait. the picture is not very good (hi instagram) but there's a book of t-shirt transfers, pulp fiction with nazis, book of vintage children's illustrations (prime zine material) anna sui perfume in a pretty bottle donated to oxfam, pretty totebag, agent provocateur dvd and… a SONIC SCREWDRIVER.

sadly i can't sonic anything yet use you need a tiny tiny normal screwdriver to get the batteries in. i think that calls for me shouting 'IRONY!' and actually use the word in the correct context (you were doing it wrong, alanis.) i now need a to come up with a time lordlady name. i've got a sonic screwdriver, a fez (a 2 year old christmas present carl found on monday while we were tidying, he'd hidden it under the bookshelf behind the sofa and forgotten about it) and a bow tie too (not pictured) i could always just pretend to be the doctor but that is nowhere near as fun fun fun. any suggestions?

i've had all of this week off, and i was going to be super productive and finish your pretty face #17 and do EVERYTHING, but i've hardly done any zine. however i have done some tidying that's been long overdue even though it kinda looks like i haven't done much, been a babysitter for the first time ever, made overly sickly sweet white chocolate chip cupcakes for carl and watched all of the secret circle with emma introduced me to on friday when i stayed at hers on my way to bristol radical zine fest. which was nice. but hey, more about in some zine some day.

speaking of zines! we've got lots of new zines in stock at vampire sushi, and some oldies are back in stock. and there's more stuff on the way. and and and, incase i don't manage to mention it again, i'll be tabling at tooting zine fair next week's saturday, that's 25th february.

in other news, this is my current favourite song (it's also relevant to my life)

LET IT SNOW.

it snowed last night. usually on a sunday i have approx zero desire to go outside and today i didn't even need to go outside for dinner stuffs because i made epic beef casserole last night (recipe courtesy of hugh fearnley-whittingstall's mum!) and there's plenty of left overs for tonight. but i really wanted to go outside in the snow, while it was nice and squeaky and fresh! and it was heaven.

oh and yeah, i have new hair, thanks to my friend emma, and i'm madly in love with it!
