THE PAIN IN MY BUM.

i've got a doctor's appointment at one on the subject of le coccyx. i feel like such a sissy* for complaining about it (or made to feel like one, whatever) but it does still hurt. to sit. to lie down, even on my belly and to stand. not massively, i can live with it. but i just don't wanna make it worse, and i need a professional to tell me, so i don't feel bad about not going to the roller derby practise tomorrow. it's only the second one though, how much do i suck? after all the introduction sheet did say something along the lines of 'if you can't commit, don't do it'. though it did also say to take a break if i need it, physically or mentally. o hai guilt. i wish i at least had a bruise to show for my injuries. my legs only stopped killing me wednesday..

i just found out that there's a helsinki roller derby team too! and a bunch of my old friends from the olden days of finnish riot grrl are on it. oh small world. and they've got a blog. i just love their logo:

it's based on havis amanda, an iconic bronze statue/fountain in kauppatori (market square) in helsinki. how ace can a logo be?

since there's no derby for me this weekend, i've decided to do my 24h zine instead. i kinda started last night, typed one page and realised i have no glue and no idea where any of my scissors are so i left it. i'll start when i get back from the doctors & glue shopping. oh and apparently some fizzy pop insence from the bong shop..

*the least misogynist/anti-female term i could think of. why is untoughness verbalised by feminine words? c'mon, women give birth and bleed monthly and all that shit. if that ain't tough, i don't know what is. i hate the english language sometimes. sigh.

CALLS FOR SUBMISSIONS; VIRGIN #2

via: virginzine

Submission Call for Virgin #2

Last year I wrote a very personal zine called Virgin.

I’ve been amazed by how ‘successful’ Virgin #1 has been and I’ve been touched by people who’ve taken the time to contact me about it and share their stories.

I’m now ready to write #2 and would love to include some submissions!

I’m hoping Virgin #2 will be half sized, so submissions can run to a few sides.

I really want this zine to be focused from the point of view of people, like myself, who haven’t lost their virginity. I’ve thought long and hard about this decision and am anxious that an inevitable divide isn’t created between those who have had sex and those who haven’t.

Please feel free to write about anything virginity related with the exception of:

- losing virginity stories

- well meaning “it’ll be alright... I didn’t lose my virginity until I was X age...”

(I’ve been slightly confused by the number of people who’ve picked up on my brief discussion about asexuality in Virgin #1 but as that’s just as infrequently talked about, I’m happy to include submissions that relate to virginity and asexuality).

It’s absolutely ok to submit anonymously! I make this whole zine anonymously!

Submission deadline: 18th August 2010

(I know it’s really close but I really want to get it finished during my summer holidays)

Any submission will receive a free copy of the finished zine.

All submissions and questions to: virginzine@gmail.com

ROLLER DERBY, BITCHES.

this morning i went to KENT ROLLER GIRLS' first practise in herne bay with ellie, and new friends emily & veronica. it was ace. skating was a lot easier than i expected. i was so wobbly when i first got on the skates and thought there is no fucking way i can do this but within five minutes i was doing it! yaye. obviously i didn't manage to take many pictures, i was a bit busy skating. but i managed the above few while having a drink & then when everyone was getting out of their skates. but i already found some pictures on facebook. quick sharp. here's one of me on the floor after i did a seriously epic tumble on my arse;

seriously, it fucking hurt. full speed on my arse. it must have looked pretty bad cos everyone gathered round me going "you alright there?" i was. i'm walking very very gingerly though. it wasn't so bad until i got out of the car at ellie's and started walking home. also, i smacked my left hand on the floor real hard. it's got a faint bruise already starting to show (it's a hint more purple than my other hand) ouch. but that's what i get for showing off. and i did have fun. i'm just not looking forward to how much pain i'm going to be tomorrow. when all the other aches from actually doing exercise kick in. but i think i'm going to keep doing this. it was good times, hanging out with other grrrls and my favourite bit of the info sheet we got at the end is:

DON'T:
- invite friends or family to join as refs/coaches/volunteers if you think they are only in it to get a date (and don't be afraid to call them out on it, no one wants creeps in derby)

i'm obviously getting involved with the right sport. & next time i have a health check up the nurse can't give me a dirty worried look for not exercising. i was covered in sweat at the end. and there were massive dark sweat patches on the knees of my turquoise trousers. so did everyone else, but they were all wearing black leggins or whatever so mine were the only ones that showed up.

i'll write more about this in my zine.. loving the roller derby!

THINGS I GOT IN THE POST TODAY

new name necklace!

LUCKY DIP NAME NECKLACE, FROM HEIDI SEEKER.

vampire sushi necklace!

VAMPIRE SUSHI PSYCHO NAME NECKLACE FROM HEIDI SEEKER.

my necklaces!

i fucking love heidi seeker necklaces. i just found my old classic Miss Tukru necklace underneath the bed the other day while desperately trying to find some of my headcase medicine there. i thought i'd seen a half empty packet there, but they were all empty. sigh. but yay return of the necklace! i hadn't seen it for about.. six months. i was doing a bit of retail therapy last week cos i was feeling low and i thought nice new things might make me feel better (or at least excited! which it has! i like shiny new things!) so i finally bought some more name necklaces. i'd been meaning to get a vampire sushi one for ages, for zine events etc. and now i have! happy days.

post supplies

i also got some skull tape & address labels for me & vampire sushi from various sources. no more scribbling the address myself on the back of an envelope. lazy days!

in other news: carl's going to london again tomorrow. sigh. pizza time. what should i watch while he's away. i know i should use this quality me time in some productive way. i'm gonna try remember to go buy some wool tomorrow so i can start knitting stuff for thumper. one of my bestest dearest friends in the whole world, lori, is due in two weeks and that's what she calls the baby, thumper. i don't know if it's a boy or a girl or if they know, i don't really want to know yet, nor do i care. fuck gender binary! i'm well upset i'm not going to get to meet the baby belly (she's all the way in glasgow) i know meeting thumper should be / is more magnificent / exciting but thumper will be around for YEARS AND YEARS whereas the belly will be gone forever. no one seems to understand where i'm getting at. i've just never felt a baby kick through anyone's belly and if there was one baby i would like to feel that sensation (before i have my own belly to put up with) it was thumper. cos that baby will be the awesomest kid in the whole world, i'm sure of it. no pressure, kid. but aunty tukru expects awesomeness, with them genes.

carl's playing condemned (that exact bit actually. freaky) and it's freaking both of us out. agh.

MISERY BUSINESS

i feel like such a bad distro mistress (ha) lately. i am so behind on distro post. i think it's been already a month since i went to the post office (actually, three weeks) my excuses feel feeble; it's been too hot to cope with outside properly when i've had a day off, carl's been working full time in london so i haven't been able to send him to the post office, blah blah blah. i'm going tomorrow. even though it's apparently going to be even fucking hotter than before, and i also need to go to the printers, which i am REALLY not looking forward to. their large windows face the sun, uninterrupted and the copier i use is right by them. the place is fucking boiling, even when it's otherwise freezing, as long as it's sunny. i am so going to melt in there. but it has to be done. i've run out of YOUR PRETTY #10. and probably some other issues too, i really need to check.

i've been feeling a little low anyway. actually, since wednesday, really fucking low. i've sort of not taken my meds since my birthday. i ran out and i've been to useless to go to boots to get my prescription, and the last couple of days, i've also been to skint. yaye. the combo of unmedicated anxious madness and worrying about fucking money, always good. i've been trying to cheer myself up by buying things on the internet (i had money in my/our paypal, it's not the same/real money) hopefully some of it will turn up tomorrow. i think it might just work, once my stuff turns up. i need to write letters, and #11, and stories. i just keep re-writing the bit i scribbled on a piece of scrap paper at work on tuesday. sigh.

SHOW ME YOUR TATS.

show me your tats

show me your tats

i like to scribble on myself.

i think my first one will be pretty similar to the kitty cat one, where i've scribbled it. kotikissa is finnish for "home cat" or a homebody. i am one. i want one including the word "seikkailuun" on my other shoulder, same place. it means "towards adventure". i'm thinking that should involve a unicorn somehow.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: QUEER EXPERIENCES OF PREGNANCY

via sarah tea-rex:

QUEER EXPERIENCES OF PREGNANCY

I’m currently training to become a doula, and as part of that training, I’d like to create a zine around queer folks’ experiences with pregnancy and childbirth. I’d like to interview people—either in person, if they’re local in Montreal, or by email or phone, if they’re not. I’m primarily interested in talking with people who’ve already given birth, but I’d also love perspectives from partners or from people who expect to give birth in the future and feel like you have something to contribute! You can email me at erika.pierre@gmail.com

*People of color, trans folk, and other people from traditionally marginalized backgrounds are strongly encouraged to participate!!*

**Feel free to post this wherever and pass it along to people who might be interested.**

RECIPIES; GNOCCHI with BLUE CHEESE & BACON

i'm sorry this recipe isn't exactly vegan or even vegetarian. but i made this today and it was pretty fucking lush. and so easy!

GNOCCHI WITH BLUE CHEESE, BACON & SPINACH PEAS

SERVES 2

500g fresh gnocchi
4 rashers of bacon
100g bag of spinach leaves
75g blue cheese
3-4 tbsp milk

boil a large pan of water, add the gnocchi and cook for 3 minutes / or as instructed. meanwhile in another pan, fry the bacon until crispy. add spinach, stir for 1 minute until wilted, then add the blue cheese & milk. stir until smooth. drain the gnocchi, toss together with sauce & serve.

except! i forgot to buy spinach so i used some frozen peas for green stuff instead! also, you can use normal pasta instead of gnocchi if you want to. also, for veggie version, i reckon you could use veggie bacon (obvs) or replace the bacon with veg, like courgette, peppers whatever you feel like..

thank you tesco magazine. i'm gonna make this for dinner again tomorrow. nom.

CALLS FOR SUBMISSIONS; dear friend

VIA; HANNAH (NOT LONELY ZINE)

I am looking for submissions of articles on the theme of penpalling. Some ideas might be:

- How you got into penpalling
- Things you love (or don't love!) about penpalling
- Meeting penpals, especially if it went particularly well (or badly)
- Any significant friendships/relationships you've developed as a result of penpalling

It could be written as an article, or as a letter to someone (perhaps a letter to a long lost penpal, or to
someone who has become very close to you, or to a now ex-penpal you fell out with).

There is no minimum or maximum length for submissions, although I will reserve the right to edit submissions (I don't imagine this will be significant editing - just spelling corrections and suchlike if needed). I also reserve the right to turn down submissions - I don't imagine it is likely I will, but I don't want to vow to include everything in case I have to default on that promise.

There is no deadline - the zine will be put together once I have enough submissions to fill 40 A6 (1/4 size) pages. If I am lucky enough to recieve more submissions than I have space for, then I will produce several issues of the zine.

Everyone who has a submission included in the zine will receive a free copy of the zine.

Please email submissions to not_lonely_zine @ yahoo.co.uk (without the spaces),along with the name and any contact info you want put in alongside your article (it's okay if you want it to be anonymous). I did consider taking complete page submissions, but as there are paper size differences between Europe and other countries, and I love putting together layouts, I decided it would be better/easier to take submissions by email only.

The working title of the zine is "Dear Friend".

SOPHIE'S DAHL & RAMBLES

carl carrying the shopping home

sophie's dahl

sophie's dahl

carl made us lush dinner. lentils with roasted sweet potatoes & lemon rice, aka sophie's dahl. so fucking good. it was actually really nice and refreshing! quite a bit of effort, but so worth it. it's been a while since i've written about food. this may be cos it's been a while since either of us has done serious cooking. it's mostly been anything quick but nice, pasta, burgers, frozen pizza, again. carl's been working in london for almost two weeks now, still going back again on monday. i miss him, but i guess the money will come in handy. we've both been having sandwiches for lunch, it's really too warm to have anything warm anyway, and due to the whole pizza & burgers thing, there's not been leftovers anyway. work's been ok. too hot of course, but luckily i found some black i don't know what they are called, khakis i guess from primark that are knee lenght and quite cool temperature wise so i don't have to wear tights for my modesty's sake now, which is a relief. i hope it starts raining again soonish. i've been trying to work on #11, it's not really happening. i know what i want to write about and what about it, but it's hard cos i don't really want to think about it again.. but enough being cryptic about that. i also started writing my vampire story, sort of. that's easier. sort of. ha. a lot of sort ofs there. and i've been listening to the southern vampire mysteries audiobooks. fuck yes. i rather wish they had included bubba in the tv series (true blood is based on the books if you didn't know.) oh and i watched new moon the other day so i could legitemately hate on it cos i've actually seen it. i think i sprained my eyes from rolling them so much. blah, urgh. it just pisses me off so much. vampires that sparkle in sunlight? fuck off. and then there's that whole tragic romance with a chastity belt on bullshit. i'm not even going to go there. just no. sure, it was nicely filmed and stuff but the story.. no no no no no no nonon nononononoo. ok, that's it.

oh yeah, speaking of vampires, vampire sushi distro's got a few new zines again!
